WHAT IS BARBERMONGER?

BARBERMONGER is a site designed to help roleplayers find other roleplayers, specifically one-on-one roleplayers, as opposed to larger roleplay games. Functioning like a pinboard, BARBERMONGER allows users to create advertisements, bump advertisements, and respond to other advertisements, without requiring them to register an account. However, registering an account will allow you to edit your posts, find your own topics, and use the private messaging system.

Righty, if you want to know more about limits etc look here and if you are interested in continuing a little werewolf story with me then email me a reply at toodegradedtobetrue@gmail.com and let's write!

The persistent rumors that becoming a werewolf made one immune to human ailments were wrong. Useful, perhaps, for keeping the public afraid enough to justify the lack of legal protections, but entirely incorrect nevertheless. The constant drainage at the back of James’ throat now that pollen season was underway was proof enough; the Infection wasn’t even able to mute mild spring allergies, let alone anything more serious.

Everything was faintly dusted in yellow, from the dingy cars in the parking lot to the sidewalk to the concrete stairs leading from one apartment floor to the next. The gutters hadn’t been cleaned in so long that new pines could be seen sprouting amid leaves that had long turned to mulch.

A police cruiser was parked conspicuously at the back of the parking lot, away from the cars belonging to residents. A warning that didn’t go unnoticed, although the few people outside behaved as if they didn’t notice. Surveillance was a reality of their lives, one that rendered the fear and stress of unlawful searches or state sanctioned violence into background noise. Ever present, but to be on high alert all the time was exhausting.

Watched as they were, the apartments were still preferable to living out of a car. That had been life before moving into the city and joining one of the more prominent packs there. Few landlords wanted to rent to werewolves, and they were legally allowed to not only turn people away but to cut off their contract if they were discovered to be Infected. That was the benefit of Overton Rise pack; they had pooled together the resources to buy out a section of one of the only apartment complexes willing to rent to them. It was poorly maintained with few amenities and many roaches, but it was a roof and (mostly) safety from the elements.

The other residents of the complex were too poor to move or to have enough political clout to evict the pack; instead they opted to create an unwelcoming environment through more traditional means such as threatening grafitti and frivolous complaints to the superintendant. But at least they disliked the police presence as much as the wolves did, and they never made 911 calls.

The police were the friends to nobody who lived there.

Of course, in the world outside the apartment complex the neighbors were, by and large, more likely to be stopped by the police than James was. His white skin protected him from suspicion, and his status as Infected wasn't immediate obvious except during the Shift.

And he had enough control that he wouldn't accidentally shift in public, and he certainly wasn't going to do so on purpose, so the chances of being shot in anything but a premeditated incident were limited.

Not all of the pack had the protection of whiteness, and he was aware of how much easier his life was for it in a way that he hadn't been before Infection. Before, he had considered police violence in much the same way as Hollywood celebrities: Aware of its existence, but it seemed so far outside of his life that he never much considered it.

But now there was no ignoring it. Every couple of months one of the newly Infected was shot during an accidental shift. The pack tried to hunt down fresh werewolves, to bring them to safer territory while they learned to control their shifting, but it was an impossible task to find everyone before tragedy struck.

James eyed the police cruiser with trepidation as he paced outside his apartment, fingers sliding to the phone in his pocket every few seconds. But there remained none of the buzzing that would have announced the message he was waiting for. Already the moon could be seen, a faint half crescent hovering above. He had expected a message half an hour ago, and had texted to double check once twenty minutes had passed.

But there had been no response.

Perhaps they had been in such a hurry that they were on their way without first letting him know? He hoped that was the case.
